A brilliant Christmas idea from Steve at Temple Bags...kudos to you good Sir. I recently purchased the U-Zip Duffle Bag, which I believe will be with me for the rest of my days. Truly original, functional and on-point. Enjoy.

My Ten for the Decade

I really did what I could to resist it, but lists are contagious like H1N1 right now and I can't help but weigh in with my Top Ten of the 00's. Note that these are in no particular order and that the selection is entirely subjective. Don't hold your breath for any surprises or odd ducks, as most of these are rather predictable consensus choices.

The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
Wolf Parade - Shine A Light
TV On The Radio - Staring At The Sun
The Knife - Heartbeats
LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
The Streets - Turn The Page
Radiohead - Idioteque
Hot Chip - Over And Over
The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
The Killers - Mr. Brightside

Did I miss anything? Not easy to pick ten... and I didn't even try to rank them. I'm surprised Daft Punk didn't make it on there, and even more surprised The Killers did make it on the list. The reason for that is that I can't narrow Daft Punk down to a single song that stands out, unless the RRROOOOOOBOOOTTTT.......HUUUUMMMAANNNNNNNN intro to their 2007 live show counts, whereas I can totally see myself Karaoke-ing Mr. Brightside on a beach somewhere in 20 years without a whisper of irony. Seven Nation Army loses many points through revisionist ears, and to justify its inclusion I had to think back to when I first heard it, on the radio. Today that song feels too ubiquitous to be uniquely memorable, but when that riff first came through the car speakers back in the Spring of 2003, I slowed down to listen.

*UPDATE*

I can't believe I forgot Reptilia. I'll remember that bassline until the day I die, and possibly after.

'Tis the season for lists...

We're swiftly approaching a figurative eclipse of the calendar... a perfect alignment of the end of a year, the end of a decade, the end of the first decade of a new millenium (although there are nerds out there who will point out that the next decade doesn't really begin until 2011... these are the same people who smugly held Millenium parties on Dec. 31, 2000). Such supernatural (not really) events tend to whip the average person into a frenzy, but this is the first end of a decade of the blogging age (again, I'm sure there's a super nerd out there who will beg to differ) and as a result there are many many lists popping up. There are many kinds of lists, like the top ten fashion trends of the 2000s (that one's not bad) and lists of things that aren't popular anymore (nostalgia didn't make it, apparently). The ones that interest me, however, are the music lists. There's Pitchfork with their always interesting and always debatable top 50 albums and top 100 tracks, not to mention their P2K colossus that was dropped (pun....intended?) a little earlier this year. Rolling Stone's lists can be found conveniently summarized on Stereogum here and the Stereogum homepage features some popular lists down the right-hand side. Music lists or the "Top ____ (songs, albums, bands, guitarists, groupies) of the _____ (century, decade, genre, geographic region)" are nothing new, but the freaky convergence of decade ending + year ending x proliferation of blogs has really clogged things up, hasn't it?

The proliferation of lists leads me to conclude that we're far too interested in what other people think. We want to know what their favorite music is, and we write our own lists in order to receive approval/validation of our tastes. It's impossible to avoid I suppose, but the real advantage is that you'll probably find some great music you haven't heard before.

Chris Isaak vs. The XX

I'm hoping this is The XX's ode to Chris Isaak, cause like, who didn't worship the song Wicked Games back in the 90's. And when you get a hottie like Helena Christensen in your video, the song that accompanies deserves to be oded, or at least sampled (are these guys even old enough to remember this sweet, dark love melody?). Or maybe sheer brillance has struck us once again, 20 years later?

Party Dresses

At my company Christmas Party on Saturday, I looked around at all the girls in their fail-proof LBD's. Yes, they all looked good. Yes, they all looked the same.
Although an LBD is safe and guaranteed, it's boring. Snoozeworthy. Uninspiring.
It's always exciting to be that splash of colour in a sea of black...
